About this position

The decommissioning of OWFs poses significant challenges in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and impact on marine ecosystems. Estimating GHG emissions, costs, durations, and environmental impact of OWF decommissioning activities is essential to support the growth of offshore wind required to meet the EU's renewable electricity targets. For this reason, the wind energy group of TNO has recently extended its offshore logistic simulation platform UWISE by developing UWISE Decommission, a new module that allows the modelling of different strategies for sustainable and cost-effective OWF decommissioning campaigns.

What will be your role?

The goal of this research is to investigate cost-effective ways to reduce the GHG emission footprint of future large-scale OWF decommissioning campaigns in the North Sea Region.
For this MSc project the following main steps are foreseen:

• Literature study on OWF decommissioning and different GHG emission quantification methodologies;
• Building a GHG assessment model for emission calculations;
• Evaluating different OWF decommissioning scenarios using UWiSE Decommission and the GHG assessment model that you developed;
• Writing the final report and presenting results.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a student who:

• is excited to delve into this topic as part of the thesis project;
• is enthusiastic and keen to work on offshore wind energy;
• is eager to learn and passionate about sustainability and innovation;
• has strong programming skills (Matlab/Python) and a natural inclination for in-depth data analysis;
• lives in the Netherlands and is enrolled in a Master's program in the field of engineering;
• has strong communication skills and is proficient in English both verbally and in writing.
