Students in Delft

Type dienstverband: Internship and graduation project Locatie: Delft Opleidingsniveau: WO Uren per week: Fulltime - 40

What will be your role?

For a long time we needed to simplify and generalize models because computers could not cope with more complex calculations fast enough, but now we are able to use high-quality meteorological weather models to calculate design (gust) wind speeds. The latter is already adopted in the Dutch Safety Assessment of Flood-Defense Systems (WBI). The aim of this thesis project is to derive the methodology and show the feasibility of using climatological model datasets of wind speeds in the derivation of design wind speeds for the design of buildings and structures as well. This newly developed methodology makes use of state of the art knowledge in climatological modelling and probabilistic analysis and should make it applicable in the context of design in the built environment. Thereby results using this derived methodology will be compared to more traditional approach using only wind speed measurements (observations) in the (European) design codes.
You will be working is a supervising team of both TNO in Delft, being the main supervisor and having expertise in the engineering and probabilistic domain, and the KNMI in de Bilt, having the expertise on the climatological models. Your main location will be Delft, but you are expected to work from the KNMI approximately once a week. You will be performing your research within the Risk and Reliability team working (among others) on the reliability assessment and probabilistic analysis of engineering structures.

What we expect from you

We offer a graduation position to students that:

  • Follow a master program in civil engineering, building engineering, (applied) physics or mathematics, or similar.
  • Have experience in probabilistic modelling (e.g. course Probabilistic Design at TU Delft) and preferably a course on random vibrations or wind engineering.
  • Like to tackle multidisciplinary problems and broaden your field of expertise with that of climatological models, you want to know why certain phenomena occur and determine its effect.
  • Like to cooperate with others and find making your work explainable to people with different expertise an interesting challenge.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and preferably Dutch language (B1 level).

You are required to work from both Delft and de Bilt.
